What does the game of football mean in your mind? Is it just a hobby you can enjoy with your family and friends? Do you enjoy watching the Sunday games with loved ones? Are you on a high school team and hope that you can be pro one day? No matter which of these applies to you, the following article can help you become a better player.

There are so many techniques, strategies and schemes involved in football that it is almost impossible to know them all. Being a smart player can make up for your lack of strength and speed. If you cannot out muscle them, outsmart them instead.

Never be the stereotype. Often people see football players as jocks with few brain cells. You all know that’s far from the truth. Football works all aspects of who you are. Your mind needs to be as agile as your feet. So don’t play to this silly stereotype. Show people that athletes excel in all aspects of life.

Learn about the different types of football. Tackle football is the kind of football that is played by the NFL, which is very physical. Flag football involves pulling a “flag” or ribbon off an opposing player. Touch football involves “tackles” where you just touch another player using both of your hands.

Work on your endurance as a football player, along with all your other training. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how good you are in your position, if you can’t be at your best from kickoff until the last second ticks off the clock. Train and practice hard, and keep your endurance on a professional level.

Try to focus some of your exercises on increasing speed. Do jumping squats to increase the speed of your reflex muscles. Squat down and jump on a step. Stand straight up and then jump back down and into a squat. Repeat this exercise 40 times daily and gradually increase the height of the step.

Build power and muscles by training with box jumps. Make sure you have a very sturdy large box with a height between 2 feet and 3 feet, determined by your own height. Jump onto the edge of the box repeatedly, straightening your back each time you reach the top of the box. Repeat up to 20 times.

Always take the time to stretch all of your muscles before you begin to practice or play football. If you do not stretch you are risking hurting yourself, which can then lead to you not being able to play for a long time. Do the right thing and stretch before you start.

Always pretend that there is a scout watching you play. Do this at games, at team practices and even when you practice alone. If you keep your form up every time you play your position, you are teaching your body exactly how it has to move to be successful.

If you are a quarterback, it is important to tweak your throwing mechanics. This is done by learning proper footwork. When throwing the ball make sure that the toe of the foot opposite of your passing arm is pointed toward your receiver. Line your hips and chest toward your intended target and keep your arm close to your helmet. As you release the ball allow your arm to continue its intended path downwards.

Always know what level your playing is at. When you play to high of a level, you are likely to make mistakes. So choose a level that suits your level of skill and your ambition to play better.

Stretch all your muscles before practicing or playing a game and wear all of your protective equipment. Muscle injury is much more likely if you begin playing before your muscles are warmed up. Safety gear is required for a reason. Ensure that your helmet fits well because head injuries sustained while playing football can be extremely dangerous.

When kids play football, make sure that they are safe. Due to the violent nature and the number of players, football tends to cause lots of injuries. These can include minor pains and aches, but also injuries like pulled muscles, ankle sprains, broken bones, concussions, and torn ligaments. Many of these can be prevented by having kids wear proper equipment, play by the rules, and use proper techniques.

There may be times when it is more effective to run the ball even though there are receivers open. Learning to know when to change a play is important for any quarterback. If you are running a passing play and spot an opening, power run up the opening to gain the maximum yardage.

If you’re playing for fun or playing to become pro, you’ll need to always keep your passion alive. Learning more about playing the game can make you into a better player. Keep learning and practicing to get better.
